Editorial designers make up a large part of the graphic design field. They work on the layout and visual aesthetics of books, newspapers, magazines, online publications, and other media. Each editorial design is unique in aesthetic.

The industry is definitely in demand; however, it’s slowly moving towards an online approach instead of the conventional printed outcomes due to the development of technology and social media. The audiences are very large and depend on what the editorial is about.

Editorial design jobs fall into two career paths: working as a freelancer and choosing which projects you want to work on; or working in-house for a magazine or newspaper; or designing books at a studio. Working in-house involves a set of hours amongst a large department. You’re also given a salary with bonuses that you may not get as a freelancer. You are required to find enough clients to earn steady pay.

Personally, I’d like to work in an agency or in-house studio. I’m a sociable person, and I’d like to work with other people. I’d like to work as an editorial designer for a magazine, helping to decide how images and text will go together on a page or screen. while collaborating with editors on how articles should be arranged on the page.
