Editorial design 🖥

A few of the modules from my course throughout the last two years, required me to design various editorial designs from a publication document, catalogue to a booklet. I really enjoyed the process of making each outcome and exploring layout and compositions in a complex way across all outcomes. I also had great interest in designing the artwork and content for my editorial design outcomes.

Above are some of the editorial designs I’ve produced across two modules in the format of a publication document. I’ve explored various layouts and scales on both outcomes to produce unique designs.

Editorial design is the look and layout of an item of printed media – that might be a newspaper or magazine, but also includes brochures and books. In terms of their work, editorial designers focus on the layout of the pages, their task being to structure print materials in an attractive way which attracts readers’ attention, entertains them, helps them to digest the information on the page, and guides them through the publication.

To produce a successful piece of editorial design, it’s fundamental to explore and experiment with techniques. Working with colour, contrast and motion is key. The design must flow and contrast smoothly whilst maintaining consistency. Good editorial designers use layout grids to reinforce the recognisability of the publication in question, especially with magazines and newspapers, sticking to a fixed grid helps readers to keep their bearings.
