Portfolio – A living, evolving collection of records that reflect your achievements, skills, experiences, and characteristics. It highlights and displays samples of some of your best work, as well as life experiences, values, and accomplishments.

In order to pursue a career in any design industry, It is fundamental to have a high-quality standard portfolio relevant to the position.  I decided to look for successful examples of portfolios suitable for the editorial design industry, but I couldn’t really find much. I then decided to look at portfolios that were appropriate for the overall graphic design industry, which is much broader and would fit in a variety of design sectors such as editorial design

I discovered some useful tips on a blog written by a marketing writer  “Caroline Forsey.” The advice was to:

• Demonstrate your versatility.
Prioritize quality over quantity by displaying your best work.
• Make it clear and simple to navigate.

These are critical points because the overall portfolio should only show the best work, that will impress employers and increase chances of getting a job.

👩🏻‍💻Examples of Successful design portfolio👨🏻‍💻

Studio Feixen’s portfolio (Image credit: ©Studio Feixen)

Studio Feixen, based in Switzerland, is a design studio. Their portfolio is in the format of a website and is very vivid and engaging. I like how the main page displays a diverse range of projects. It’s like a colourful explosion. The structure is presented in a very neat and distinctive manner. It’s fascinating to see all of the different projects that the designers from this studio have worked on; it demonstrates a wide range of skills and abilities.

When it comes to creating my portfolio, I might use this format because it does a great job of showcasing skills efficiently. I’ll also consider the job role I’m applying for and ensuring I show more work related to that field, in order to be considered as a successful candidate.

My Behance portfolio 💻

Since last year I created a behance account to showcase some of my strongest designs from projects I completed across my modules. This is a good way to connect with other designers and find inspiration and potential jobs. I used various mock-ups to present my designs in an aesthetically appealing and presentable way. I’m currently looking into all the different ways to create my own personal website with my own domain that would showcase all of my work.

My Instagram account 👨🏻‍🎨

I also created an Instagram account, where I share some of my design work and processes. I really like using Instagram as a designer, it’s a great way to make connections with other designers and find inspiration. I wouldn’t use my Instagram as a portfolio when applying for jobs, as it’s quite unprofessional.
